How to Play

A stack of blue chips sits in the centre. Their matching red chips are hidden face-down around the dial. Tap the blue to reveal its number or icon, then flip reds until you find its pair. Match found — you scored! Unused flips become bonus points, so the quicker the find, the better.

Each blue has a flip limit — and it’s tighter than you’d expect, all based on the Critical Survival Threshold (CST) outlined under A389262 in The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS®). With 5 pairs you get just 3 flips. With 9 pairs, just 6. You need a strategy.

LIMBO — If the very first blue runs out of flips unmatched, tap LIMBO to save it and send it to the bottom of the stack for one last chance.

LUCK vs. BRAIN — A lucky player may blind guess the matches to get a high score, yet be ranked low. The CHAMPS leaderboard documents both.

BE THE CHAMP — three ways you can be the reigning champion of any category: 1. higher score 2. equal score and faster time 3. higher merit at a time no slower. 

A high score by a low-rank player means that a fast, smart game can beat luck. This is the essence of the game.

The cycle and the row — the art and heart of the game

The icon on each red chip also encodes its number — Dog has 4 legs, Hand has 5 fingers, Glasses have 2 lenses. Use this. When you flip a red, its value tells you where to look next. Blue is Dog (4) → flip position 4, find Hand (5) → flip position 5, find Glasses (2) → flip position 2, find Dog — matched! You’ve traced the cycle 4→5→2→4. Now you know exactly where 5 and 2 live for all future blues. Loop lengths (LL) indicates and controls (–> SET) how long or short these cycles are within a shuffle — mastering them is mastering the game. Default is always mixed LL. (Tutorial video ▶)

While the Rower mostly replays a linear sequence from the start to locate each value — often pointing chip by chip — the Cycler’s associative map usually delivers the answer in a single mental step, not unlike “go two blocks, turn left, continue straight before making a right…” or even “go straight, you’ll see it” vs. “it’s next to the obelisk.” On another level, both benefit from the brain’s visual memory, just like in a classic picture matching game.

Following a row strategy can also get you pretty high scores, especially when combined with blind-guess Lotto, Limbo and Pin. But all those tools are available to the Cycler too, along with some sly shortcut and bumphole tactics. And as pairs grow, the Rower starts to sweat…

The extras

• Lotto — Tap the clover before revealing the blue, then blindly pick a red. Correct = massive bonus. Wrong = costs one flip, nothing more.
• Pin — After flipping a red, tap the pin to rotate the dial so that chip lands on its own position. A guaranteed future find that also redraws the loop lengths map.
• Eye — Tap to peek at all reds at once. Tap again to hide them. One use per game, great for practicing, not allowed in competition.
• Tips — A long collection of short one-liners to help you master the game. Tap to open.
• / Sun & Moon — Toggle between dark Moon mode and bright Sunny mode for outdoor play. Safe to switch any time, even mid-game.

Pairs (P) = how many chips. Start small.

Flips (F) = limit to see reds per blue.

Limbo (L) = yellow ringed unmatched blue goes to the bottom of the stack to resurface.

Loops (LL) = loop lengths in the shuffle (1-P)

Finish a game and enter your name (nickname) plus your country then tap to submit your score for World Championship validation. Certify your chosen name (You) or Poke a record score/time anonymously. Flashing red dots indicate poked records.

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP — your own playground. Beyond the 19 World Cup Grand Slam Records (WR), there are over 200,000 Custom Category Records (CR) waiting to be claimed — every unique combination of pair count, flip limit, how many missed blue chips get limbo and what loop lengths (LL) to shuffle: you choose yourself (SET button). Pick a category from the board (Champs) that fits your style, hunt unusual phenomena, claim what nobody else has. There’s no wrong choice — only your choice.

Each CR is a road less traveled — an open invitation to discover the cognitive traits, memorization habits and strategy quirks specific to its combination. Different categories engage different neurological paths in the brain; every Custom game is a small experiment in how you, uniquely, think. GLM offers about 10 quintillion more different game shuffles than the total number of permutations on the classic, six-colored 3x3x3 magic cube invented by Ernő Rubik.

How World Ranking works

Every shuffle is a different game, and every category has a worth 1-441. Some shuffles hand points away, some hide everything, so score alone says little. What counts is how much of an actual shuffle a player converts into points. 

• MERIT is the room between the floor — what a player with no memory gets free — and the ceiling, the most a perfect memory could take without gambling. Score above the ceiling and the surplus was luck: it stays on the scoreboards and earns no merit. Merit runs 1-441.
• RANK — GLM100 reflects a player’s single best game, never a total. One brilliant game IS your rank, grinding many is not. A big board offers more room, so playing it well ranks you high, but playing it badly ranks below a small board played perfectly.

For Custom Category Records (CR), a fourth factor joins in: Loop lengths (LL) within a shuffle — Mixed (default), or a minimum and a maximum bound range, reflecting the wide scale of cognitive load while memorizing and strategizing. The 19 WR Grand Slam category games (3-21P) are always shuffled and played at the OEIS® A389262 flip limit with one Limbo and Mixed (random) loop lengths (LITE tier has only WR games). 

Family — Three ways to play: tap the badge next to the title in the upper right corner of the screen to switch between tiers: PRO for the full feature set, LITE for quick WR games, and KIDS for the youngest, with a password protected, parent-controlled screen-time setting. Open and navigate between them in the top right corner (KIDS is gated to LITE and PRO only through parent).

App — Install Grego’s Limbo Match to your home screen as a Progressive Web App (PWA) for one-tap access:

• iPhone/iPad (Safari): tap the Share button → “Add to Home Screen”
• Android (Chrome): tap the menu (⋮) → “Install app”
• Other browsers: look for an install icon in the address bar or menu.

Once installed, runs full-screen offline like a native app, your score submission cued for validation when you go online.
